GHAZALE BAHIRAIE

Artiste multidisciplinaire

Born in Tehran (Iran) in 1989

She has been exhibiting her work since 2010 and obtained a Master’s degree in Painting from the Tehran School of Fine Arts before moving to France in 2016.

“Drawing, embroidery, mixed media and video are among the techniques she practises. Being rather curious and wandering in spirit, she has always been interested in the small fragments and tiny objects around her. As a curious artist, she feels a bit like a spectator to whom no detail escapes. Since the beginning of her professional career at the age of twenty, which coincided with the Green Movement in Iran, she has always had a critical and rebellious spirit.

Through her work, she seeks to express her opposition to the ruling regime in Iran, as well as to the conditions of war in Middle Eastern countries and global inequalities, particularly women’s rights and maternal feelings.

In her latest exhibition, ‘Petites allégories d’une grande révolte’ (Small Allegories of a Great Revolt), Ghazale Bahiraie pays tribute to all the everyday heroes who took part in the 2022 Iranian Revolt that followed the death of Mahsa Amini. The artist draws inspiration from both literature and religion, two essential areas of Iran’s contemporary history.

Her trees are not merely landscapes; they are the very bodies of this land. Beings whose roots draw from memory and whose branches rise amidst the turmoil of fire. This exhibition tells the story of resilience at the heart of the flames, where the boundary between destruction and rebirth blurs. In these works, a constant dialogue unfolds between gentleness and violence. The artist uses embroidery and thread—symbols of care, intimacy and healing—to express the wounding, anguish and chaos of a nation under the fire of oppression. Here, every stitch becomes an act of survival in the face of destruction. These feet moving forward through the ashes are the footprints of a people who refuse to fall. Under constant threat, in the shadow of an imposed war, they seek refuge. A refuge beneath a tree which, though scarred by a foreign fire, still feels life pulsing through its veins of thread. This resilience is not the result of carelessness, but the splendour of roots that refuse to let go, reaching towards a sky that will remain, against all odds, free and infinite.
