The dizziness of detail | Nurhidayat et Nicolas Pégon
Eloge de la minutie
“For the exhibition “The Vertigo of Detail,” Nurhidayat and Nicolas Pégon accepted
my proposal for a two-person show because they both admire each other’s work. Both
artists express themselves through drawing (Nurhidayat also paints) and have been exhibiting in my
gallery since its inception. Masters of representation, their works are above all
graceful.
Nicolas Pégon creates a hyper-realistic universe, featuring unlikely combinations and
the appearance of familiar objects that we come to recognize through his exhibitions.
But he does not merely reproduce; he constructs a universe populated by
tattooed, sexualized, grimacing characters, often drawn from his inner circle.
Nurhidayat is guided by a dreamlike quality. Inspired early in his career by his
native Indonesia, he breaks free from it but returns for the Lullaby series, set in the
forests. He then creates hybrid characters, part human and part animal, within the
poetry of nature. This contemporary surrealist, too, loves to surprise us
with his improbable “collages.”
I greatly admire these two artists and invite you to discover their worlds.”
