NICOLAS PÉGON
DrawerBorn in Lyon in 1984, Nicolas Pégon lives and works in Saint-Étienne. In 2007, he obtained his DNAT in Textile Design from the École Nationale des Beaux Arts in Lyon.
Images, representations and affiliations collide in Nicolas Pégon’s work. His drawings are developed through a subconscious logic of massive inductions. They are part of a heterogeneous sublimation, on the fringes of the iconic. An unorthodox emotion in which luminous gradations exalt an inexpressible feeling, both volcanic and diffuse. A collage of sufficient elements, of heterogeneous motifs overlapping in their mutual alterations, their autarkic preciosities, their lacunar deficiencies. A play of the mind with raw sensuality, mimetic figuration and scrupulous craftsmanship. “For the exhibition “The Vertigo of Detail,” Nurhidayat and Nicolas Pégon accepted my proposal for a two-person show because they both admire each other’s work. Both artists express themselves through drawing (Nurhidayat also paints) and have been exhibiting in my gallery since its inception. Masters of representation, their works are above all graceful. Nicolas Pégon creates a hyper-realistic universe, featuring unlikely combinations and the appearance of familiar objects that we come to recognize through his exhibitions. But he does not merely reproduce; he constructs a universe populated by tattooed, sexualized, grimacing characters, often drawn from his inner circle. Nurhidayat is guided by a dreamlike quality. Inspired early in his career by his native Indonesia, he breaks free from it but returns for the Lullaby series, set in the forests. He then creates hybrid characters, part human and part animal, within the poetry of nature.
