Fluid space | Jo Lewis
Jo Lewis’ artistic attitude is to approach a river, to consider it as a natural environment to be respected, and with which to engage in dialogue. Her intuitions and her memories of her childhood spent beside a canal in the countryside of Britain gradually led her to enter into a relationship with watercourses,
her refuges where she found a part of herself. On the banks of a river that flows into the Thames and near the Durenque and Agoût rivers in the Tarn, the artist took the time to visit them, to enter into a relationship with the water, listening to its behaviour, welcoming all kinds of sensations that were offered to her. As she went along, she allowed herself to be guided by the rivers with which she conversed, in mutual understanding.
Fully immersed in these moments of gentle dialogue, her works on paper embody these experiences, which are both intimate and playful. They reveal a tension between movement and stability, between emptiness and fullness. Jo Lewis’s artistic process is comparable to choreography… (Pauline Lisowski)
