Espaces baroques : ondoiements | Frédéric Galliano
For this 1st exhibition, Frédéric Galliano presented a series of works entitled ‘Espaces baroques’, mainly watercolours on paper and aluminium sculptures, all based on his reflections on the notion of the monad. However, he immersed us in a new language, far removed from the artist’s usual classicism and rectitude, plunging us into a Baroque universe where movement, undulation and drama were summoned up.
With definite references to the architecture of Borromini or the work of Rubens, his works borrow the most striking features of this revival from that period, and redefine his works in a dizzying register where his monads unexpectedly come to life in convolutions, swellings and magmas. This series was part of a reflection on the notion of undulations, of which Leibniz said that ‘it is more or less like when several stones are thrown into water at the same time, each of which makes circles, which cross each other without destroying each other, but when the number of stones is too great, the eyes become confused’.
