Japanese Paintings | Uraraka Konno
From 14 november 2015 to 14 january 2016
Uraraka Konno fell under the spell of the ancestral Nihon-Ga technique, which appeared long before the introduction of oil painting in Japan, during her studies at the Tokyo Fine Arts School. The pigments used come from crushed natural minerals and are made locally (she regularly visits Japan and brings back local products for her creations). They are mixed with deerskin glue, which acts as a binder. The pastel colours are full of softness and subtle reflections, sometimes iridescent. The artist also uses a traditional Japanese paper: Washi. It is handmade and characterised by the length of its fibres, its fineness and its strength. She stretches this paper over a wooden support like a linen canvas.
