Espaces baroques : les coupoles | Frédéric Galliano
This exhibition is based on the “shaped canvas”, the best visual option provided by the most rounded form in the “Baroque Spaces” series begun in 2020. Continuing an investigation into the Baroque, both in terms of shape (rounded, dynamic, moving, complex) and in terms of colour and effect, the specificity of the cupolas lies in both the cut-out shapes and the colours and treatment.
The stretcher frame reinforces this notion of the autonomy of the works, which are emancipated by their unique form. Displayed on the walls in this way, they seem to float in space, a sensation accentuated by the varying degrees of shadow they create. They have an undeniable physical presence, but they don’t reveal an imposing materiality, reminiscent of the domes of Baroque churches, where the very special low-angled lighting seems to make the ceiling lift off and the dome fly away.
