Francky Criquet’s restless painting seems to respond only to the intrinsic pictorial values of its appearance. In this movement of coming to the surface, the figures free themselves from the formless chaos, extricating themselves with their residual energies: an effort that restores them to life. But the bodies display the after-effects of this liminal action, exposed in their raw, scarred, blurred nudity. Despite the violence of disfigurement and erasure, the figures remain courageous, echoing a poetic word uniting heaven and earth, paradise and hell.
