Presented in conjunction with the Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon, Les coupoles is the latest in a series of Baroque paintings by Frédéric Galliano. His works, which depict the domes of Baroque churches, are based on the “shaped canvas” technique (paintings on non-rectangular canvases, often round and triangular, which are both pictorial and sculptural, and whose surface is not flat). This approach allows the work to emancipate itself, whether in form (rounded, dynamic, moving, complex) or in color and effect. For example, he draws cupola shapes that he glues onto cut-out sheets of medium, seeming to float in space while imbuing it with a powerful physical presence. They are reminiscent of those in Baroque churches, whose distinctive low-angled lighting gives the impression that they are lifting off the ceiling and even flying towards the dome!
