Trame | Olivier de Cayron
By using discontinuous materials (strips, micro-perforated wefts), the artist hides as much as he reveals. He puts an end to the linearity of the gaze, disrupting its path. The weft perforates the flatness of the work. In addition to its plastic properties of fragmentation and dispersion, the screen acts as a filter, allowing only part of the image to pass through; by subdividing it, it randomly selects what is visible, creating unexpected surprises and cut-outs. The work reveals itself by concealing the initial image. Interposed between the photograph and the viewer’s eye, it acts as a sweep that compromises any attempt at realistic identification. The plot – true to its etymology – intrigues, plots, forcing the viewer to question the meaning of his or her gaze on what it steals, what it snatches from the shadows. The work questions memory.
